My dad and I knew Mr. Bryon Rinehart. My dad, who lived in De Leon, had a big chunk of black obsidian and Mr. Rinehart wanted it since he had not knapped obsidian before and obsidian is scarce in Texas. My dad negotiated a trade - he gave Rinehart the big chunk of obsidian in exchange for making him a big spearhead (shown here). It is the only known obsidian point Rinehart made. He passed away in 1981 soon after this took place. The obsidian was about the size of two fists maybe slightly larger so it would not have made very many points. Rinehart cut his blanks out in slabs with a diamond saw. He made thousands of points and supplied rock shops and tourist shops all over the country and accepted payment only in gold. He could turn them out very fast using his secret homemade knapping jig/fulcrum.
